American Phrasebook: Addendum
When I visit a country, I like to learn how to say the usual polite things: Hello, Goodbye, Please, Thank you, It was like that when I got here. Starting two years ago, I’ve found myself learning a new phrase:
I am sorry about George W. Bush
German: Ich bin über George W. Bush traurig
Spanish: Estoy apesadumbrado sobre George W. Bush
French: Je suis désolé au sujet de George W. Bush
Italian: Sono spiacente circa George W. Bush
Portuguese: Eu sou pesaroso sobre George W. Arbusto*
Chinese (simplified): 我是抱歉关于乔治・W. 布什
Japanese: 私はジョージW. ブッシュについて残念である
Korean: 나는 조지W.부시에 관하여 유감스럽다
Russian: Я огорченн о George W. Bush
Greek: Λυπάμαι για George W. Bush
Canadian: I’m so sorry aboot George W. Bush. Sorry for bothering you with this apology, eh?

*Why Google’s language service translates Bush’s last name as a noun only in Portuguese (as far as I can tell) remains a mystery. Babelfish does not.

I am trying to translate the sentence into Hebrew but I am not sure what you mean.
Is it “On behalf of the American people, I appologize for having GWB as a president”?

Hanan, unfortunately I lack the authority to apologize on behalf of all Americans, so I am only apologizing on my own behalf, as an American, if that makes sense.
Even though you may not be visiting any Arabic-speaking countries in the near future, there are lots of Arab Americans here in the states and scattered throughout the world.
In Arabic: [transliterated for your convenience; apstrophe (‘) signifies glottal stop]
mit’assif ‘ala jorje dubble-yu boosh (I, masc.)
mit’assfeh ‘ala jorje dubble-yu boosh (I, fem.)
mit’assifayn ‘ala jorje dubble-yu boosh (we, two)
mit’assifeen ‘ala jorje dubble-yu boosh (we, royal)
‘aas-sif ‘ala jorje dubble-yu boosh (Egyptian dialect)
Your German version actually has a slightly different meaning (‘I’m sad about George W. Bush’). You may want to replace it with ‘Es tut mir wegen George W. Bush leid’ (‘I’m sorry/apologetic over George W. Bush’).
I am sorry for George Bush

Heberw – “Tzar Li Biglal Bush” – I am sorry because of Bush. “i” like in “is”
Thank you for diffusing that language meme! You have earned your blogalization merit badge. Actually, Bush’s first company was called Arbusto Petroleum, which indeed is Spanish and Portuguese for ‘shrub.’ And thanks to small w for that Arabic transliteration. I wish I COULD visit an Arabic-speaking country. I have studied the languge for 10 years but have no one to practice talking to except that nice Mr. Abdul’aziz at the Hala Hala Deli on Myrtle Avenue. He has al-Jazeera, too, which is cool. I have learned a lot of new words, like sawarikh and qanbala and hujum and ightiyal.
And….in Finnish….
“Olen pahoillani George W Bushista”
In Portuguese (Brasil) it is more idiomatic if you say: “Sinto muito pela conduta de George Bush” or “Lamento as atitudes de George Bush”. (I am sorry for his actions)
Our President says so many foolish things, he is so ignorant that I have to say and repeat everyday: “I’m ashamed for his performance”.
Actually in Canada, it’s us who will be apologizing to you. It’s just that we’re polite that way. You bump into me, I say “I’m sorry.” Then you say “That’s alright. Oh and sorry about Bush.”
That’d win you a few friends. Try not to look bewildered as you deliver the money line.
:-)
JUST WATCHED 9/11 CANT BELIEVE U VOTED BUSH BACK IN WHY HASNT SOMETHING BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS MAN
In Mauritanian it as “akkba-latsg-gige,w. bush, statsa!”
