I already subscribed, to show my support for their publishing stuff from Spinsanity. When I posted a link to Plastic of a great Tom Tomorrow cartoon, non-subscribers complained about Salon’s ads. I wish Salon would post samples, ad-free, of some of their good stuff to lure new subscribers.
The real cirme will be if Salon’s failure takes the Well down with it. But it seems like no one gives a shit about that. The Well is only one of oldest and still one of the best online communities in existance.
Okay, I love Salon and have for years. I gladly paid for the content.
But if, as the article linked from joho suggests, they couldn’t pay their rent in December, and on January 29 the landlord demanded $200,000, does that mean they are paying $100,000 a month in rent???
Given that they don’t do anything but write articles and have a tiny staff, I don’t understand why Salon didn’t slash it’s operating budget two years ago and just pay for techies and writers and a couple of editors.
47,000 subscribers at $20 a head is $940,000 a year; plus advertising revenues, it’s hard to imagine that they can’t afford to run a company for close to that.
and yet, Digital ID World (www.didw.com) survives….
in fact, last year (our first year) we ran the operation with net margins of 20%…..
why do these guys find it so hard to run an online “media presence”??? i don’t get it.
Selling written articles on the Internet is like selling snow to eskimos – you must keep your overhead as low as possible.
Pity about the linkrot when they go down, though…
“Digital Identity World is the hub of the digital identity industry, providing comprehensive news, exclusive interviews…”
There’s plenty of money out there for pro-corporate speech, like techcentralstation.com or foxnews.com
