Larry Lessig">I heart Larry Lessig

I will work for him when he runs for Senate and then I’ll vote for him when he runs for president.

One Response to “I heart Larry Lessig”

  1. I would prefer to do things the other way around, vote for him when he runs for Senate and work for him when he is President. But I guess that is just my priorities in life, I would really like to be part of the Judson Welliver Society.

Setting all of that aside, yesterday and today I was thinking about, “what if Prof. Lessig ran for Senate?” I would assume that he would run in CA, since that is where he currently resides and figure that assumption is a good one because CA would be one of the hardest states in the Union for Prof. Lessig to mount a campaign.

The two main reasons that Prof. Lessig would have a hard time running in CA are money and influence, specifically that of Hollywood. CA has two of the most expensive areas for advertising in the country, and those are the two areas that he would have to appeal to since they make up such a large portion of the state’s population. Hollywood would undoubtedly oppose Prof. Lessig and give as much money as possible to his opponent.

However, I think that Prof. Lessig would be able to cash in on the support of the masses on the internet, drawing from a pool of potential donors far larger than any opponent he might have. Especially with the new campaign finance rules that went into effect just after the midterm elections it will now be easier for a candidate with wider support from individuals to raise the money needed to run a successful campaign.

I can imagine a Lessig for Senate campaign being the first one to have the internet play a crucial role. Not through a catchy, cutting edge website, but from the internet community (more specifically the blogging community) getting behind a candidate, spreading the word and raising the funds. A real internet grassroots campaign.

Of course my ramblings make no difference, I don’t imagine Prof. Lessig running for office (although I don’t know him so I have no idea what goes through his head). Also I don’t believe somebody can run a single issue campaign, especially when that issue is not terrorism. Prof. Lessig would need to make his view on other issues known, IP might get donations from those of us who care about the fight, but it won’t get votes from the masses. Lastly, I have no idea what party Prof. Lessig is. If he is not a Democrat he has no hope of winning in CA, and if that is the case this whole monologue has been moot.
