Speaking Volumes about Traffic Tickets

Speaking Volumes about Traffic Tickets

A former boss of mine came into work one day in 1987 or so, jubilant. He had done a lot of research about how he could contest a speeding ticket he felt he didn’t deserve. At the hearing, the judge asked him for his story. My boss took out the giant law volume he’d been studying, and began: “Well, Judge, according to…”

“Case dismissed!” said the judge.

It sounds like times have changed, unfortunately. Perhaps the Web has made so many traffic violators into pre-jailhouse lawyers that a show of expertise doesn’t have the effect it once did.

(The National Motorists Association apparently has a helpful site for the Wrongfully Accused and/or Cheap.)

  1. That doesn’t sound like the judge was concerned about expertise. Sounds more like the judge didn’t want to listen to a non-lawyer talk incoherently about a bunch of cases.

I spend a lot of time in traffic court, and I see very few non-lawyer experts. Not even expert wanna-be types. Just a lot of people who don’t value their time, so they spend 2-3 hours sitting in Court when they could hire a speeding ticket lawyer to get them a deal and they wouldn’t even have to show up.

The NMA site is good, but every traffic court is different. Some treat non-lawyers well, but some are very difficult for non-lawyers. Of course, a few are even difficult for us. :-) Point being that it’s hard for a non-lawyer to know how to prepare for a court when you’re not familiar with that court. Hiring a lawyer who is familiar with that court provides a sense of security.

If you go in to one of the difficult courts, you could walk out with big fines and substantially higher insurance rates.

Think about this — what if the judge is unfair and rules against you wrongly. Are you going to appeal? Will you have done the right things to make sure you have what you need to appeal?

At least contact a local lawyer and pay for a half-hour consultation on how that court works.

I know I’m biased, but I have seen people get very poor deals on their own. Yes, I have seen people do well also. It’s not politically correct, but young women with large breasts often do well with male police officers. Even the judges seem to like them.

  2. I agree! You should save your time and money by hiring representation traffic ticket court. A traffic ticket may appear to be a simple issue but it can lead to very complex legal issues.

Then they post the name Ontario Traffic Tickets, but it goes to their web site, not http://www.ontariotraffictickets.com, pretty sleazy spamming.

  4. It is important to fight every traffic ticket you can. Customarily, insurance companies DO NOT care about points for ordinary drivers (professional drivers is a different story) they care about CONVICTIONS. If you decide to hire a representative, you should ALWAYS hire one who has a clear vision about getting your charges, DISMISSED or WITHDRAWN, not simply plead down. 5. For most people, they don’t have the time or want the stress of having to deal with this.. Thats why most people just spend the couple hundred and have someone deal with it for them.. But if you don’t make a lot of money and you have nothing else going on, by all means, spend the hours researching and studying and sitting in court waiting for your name to be called and maybe… just maybe you’ll be lucky enough to win…
