Reason to Love Canada #341

Canada’s equivalent of American Idol is a show that profiles individuals of great achievement in Canadian history. You then get to vote for your favorite. Currently in the lead position is Tommy Douglas, “the father of Medicare,” followed by Terry Fox who ran across Canada after losing his right leg to cancer.
Meanwhile, in America we’re trying to decide whether we’d rather watch The Swan or Who Wants to Blow Donald’s Trumpet?
O, Can-a-DA…

if only it were true. our equivqlent of american idol is, of course, canadian idol
The show you’re referring to is the “Greatest Canadian”, which has been done in the U.K. Germany, and several other nations.
Tonight, much to many’s chagrin, the Greatest Canadian being profiled is Don Cherry, former coach of the Boston Bruins and now hockey commentator (Coaches Corner as part of Hockey Night in Canada).
My vote is for Tommy C. Douglas, father of Canadian Medicare. Oh and Tommy didn’t lose the leg, a surgeon–finally–donated his services to save the leg. This moment in Tommy’s life drove him to establish universal medical coverage in Sask.
BTW Canadian Idol is much better than American Idol IMHO (and I’m a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada).

Don Cherry, Tim Horton’s … all these funny hockey-bound types who are sorta Canada’s answer to Ali G., in a perverse canuckle-headed way.
Tommy Dougls was a truly great man … and Kiefer Sutherland’s maternal grandfather
Great Canadians Tim Horton’s Coffee Shops ARE NOT. Horton’s have been American owned since 1995.
