[PT] Spencer Wells

Spencer Wells wants to know how humans populated the earth. His research shows that the deepest, earliest split is in the African lineage. Hence, our common ancestor was African. And it looks like the split occurred only 60,000 years (2,000 generations) ago.

So, how did we populate the earth in that time, he asks. The route went from Africa to Australia, he believes. He goes to India to try to find the missing genetic marker — one found in Australian aborigines. He found it: M130, from 50,000 years ago. About 5% of Indians have it.

Why did we leave Africa 50,000 years ago, he asks. The Ice Age may have dried out Africa, forcing us to migrate. Also, we had the “great leap forward” in human culture.

He says there’s a company that will look at your dna and tell you where you hang from the family tree. He says one in 200 men are descendents of Genghis Kahn. [I, on the other hand, trace my ancestry back to Ernest the Vexed.]

  1. I read and enjoyed the book “The Journey of Man”. I know my genes would somehow trace back to Sargon and Sennacherib. Assyrian, Neo-Aramaic, speaking people in the fertile crescent and land of Tegris and Eufrates to this day still speaking the language, for centuries have maintained their identity in the Middle East by avoiding mixing with other races and cultures. It was easier in the Middle East to keep the language and culture because of religious difference, as Assyrians are almost all Christians. They are melting away in USA now. There was no research done on the group of Assyrians especially as I believe up to the recent generation there is minimum genetic mixture in us. It will be interesting to read about it, I would appreciate your idea and references to this subject. Camille.

  2. Genographic Project Skips Indonesia?

Indonesia is a vast stretch of archipelago between Asia continent and Australia, but why does Spencer Wells plan to skip Indonesia when taking samples for his Genographic Project?

I thought you might like to read this:

Blood samples will be collected from indigenous people by researchers based at 10 sites around the world: Shanghai, China; Moscow; Tamil Nadu, India; Beirut, Lebanon; Philadelphia; Johannesburg, South Africa; Paris; Melbourne, Australia; Minas Gerais, Brazil; Cambridge, England.

  3. I have heard that the Basque people of the mountain regions of Spain and France have a language that cannot be traced to any other. Has this group ever been tested for their Y chomosome? Are they related to the man in the middle east whose descendants are to be found in Europe?

  4. I thought people from Iceland had “unique” genetic makeup, and from what I saw in the program (on PBS) it didn’t explain where they came from. Are they from the Europeans or some branch further back? I missed that and would like to know.

  5. I have found a link between the Australian tongue of Kamilaroi and an Asian Language, i.e, Tamil. I have so far compiled 650 word cognates. They cover a wide area relating to geographic features, animals, birds, human relationships, feelings, etc. From the cognates found, I can conclude that that the subject link existed thousands of years ago, even before the advent of Modern Tamil about 3000 years ago.

Equally interesting is the point that English too shares numerous root-words with Tamil. It should not be difficult to isolate a few thousand cognates and rootwords. That leads me to wonder.. who were the first occupants of England?

    Regards,
    Sathia

  6. iwould like to know my ethnic- mix-how do i go aboutit.please help.

  7. It seems like Mr. Wells is more interested in political correctness than science

  8. Do you have any DNA from Cro magnon or Neander thal??

  9. My point of view is that Mr. Wells are doing a great work for the best of mankind. It’s up to you to believe if his results is true or not.

Some people speculate also that we humans hasn’t been on moon. Is this true or not?

So please don’t talk about “political correctness”, to hide your own hatered opininon.

  10. Any one know why, for what reasons did europeans really leave africa so many years ago? What went wrong? Does anyone have an idea, on issues or reasons why?

  11. I am unable to answer a question posed by certain skeptical friends of mine who asked me: “how do we know that M168 is a mutation on the Y chromosome common to all of us?” as claimed by Spencer Wells. Is there a sample from a population lacking this mutation? If not how do we know it is a mutation? I can’t find an explanation in “The Journey of Man” to explain how we start off calling a particular mutation(M168 in particular) a mutation without a prior sample of Y chromosome that actually lacks that mutation. And absent evidence, my friends ask, how can we call M168—err—Adam? I suspect I am ignorant of certain molecular facts pertaining to mutation itself. Can you help anyone?

  12. ***It has been well over a year in a half now since I purchased my copy of “The Journey of Man” and met briefly at Boaders, Dr. Wells, and had my pb edition autographed. Except for Lena Horne (Brentano’s) and Hilary Clinton (purchased at Sam’s in Rochester, NY – signed during a visit)who are celebrities, normally, I would not be interested in getting a book signed.

I am just finishing Dr. Wells’ books. Over the year or so I stopped to read “A Peace to End All Peace”, David Fromkin,”The Ornament of the World” Maria Rosa Menocal,”King Leopolds’s Ghost”, Adam Hochschild; Judith A. Carney’s work “Black Rice”; understanding Daniel Quinns’ undertaking of “Ishmal” which I read again; taking a closer look at Dame Kathleen Kenyon’s work and re-reading the biblical book Joshua – I’d say this or I’ve drawn this one conclusion:

Dr. Wells work in “The Journey of Man” is very important but not complete. Self-admittedly, self-centered – his European orign was his original inquiry and focus. There are vital and honest questions NOT being asked, considered or even wondered about or admitted to-stunningly. I believe this can cause monumental misunderstanding of information gathered and an ‘incomplete’ effort. For example, 1)how often can one refer to the Middle East without recognizing that its recent history (the Brits’ clear racial pathologies)creating the term “middle east”. History and fact demonstrate that alone we are talking about Africa. Africa is the continent now. 2)The people were Africans first. Not Europeans yet. Not white, or yellow or browns or reds. Black. What does this mean, exactly? E-x-a-c-t-l-y. When mankind (that includes "scholars", "historians", anthropolgists, "archelogists", geneticists, deny facts, rewrite history, when race is significant to man's journey and modern "scholars", "historians", anthropolgists, "archelogists", geneticists, can't somehow conceive Black as we never knew it was first and eclipsed by mankind's inability to believe the possibilities of what we don't know -even when it just does not add up. Thank you Dr. Wells for getting as far as you have. I pray you will avoid making our journey into a hollywood moment, again. I would have preferred that my thoughts be verbal discussion w/Spencer Wells as opposed to a blog comment. Respectfully, Mrs. GP. Dickerson-Hanks Rochester, NY

I am still have a few remaining chapters (I’m at ‘The genetic fallout’,pg. 152), when I felt a s-t-r-o-n-g urge to attempt contact with Dr. Wells for meaningful conversation with a good mind.
