Haunted electricity
While I was away at Emerging Tech, the electric company installed a special meter on our incoming line to see if the voltage is clean and sober. The guy left it there for three days.
When he picked it up, he told us that he’d have to do it again because the machine broke.
Coincidence? I think not….Bwahahahaha.
Meanwhile, I have now thrown out my bookshelf-style stereo system because it lost all bass and the remote stopped working; the tuner can only be tuned through the remote. (Yes, I did put in new batteries. And I did get a Mac.)
For those who care (= no one) I’ve replaced the stereo with a $25 set of Creative Labs speakers for my laptop which will now serve as my tuner as well as my CD player. Nice sound! (Ah, the benefits of middle aged hearing loss!)
Strange electronics boxes started showing up on our power transformers in my neighborhood last year. Nobody seemed to have an explanation. The guys installing it wouldn’t tell neighbors what they did. Calls to the utility (not by me) didn’t yield information.
In Van Eck phreaking, you can tell what people are typing or transmitting by analyzing electromagnetic variation at extremely low levels…time to turn on my VPN all the time?
Wow. Glenn, if I didn’t know you and know that you’re a serious and sober journalist, I would have written this off. Sounds like a story you ought to pursue…
Wow. I think you’d better round up all the receipts for any electrical equipment you’ve had to replace over the last two years. I’m guessing the power company owes you some $$$.
And maybe they’ll kick in a few bucks for an exorcist — that’s the next service level.
These strange grey boxes started popping up on the power lines and poles around our neighbourhood about 9 months ago.
Same deal: no one knew what the heck they were. Then, after much digging, my neighbour and I figured out they’re these.
And here’s a related story about their installation in a northern Ontario town.
So if this means what I think it means, it could turn out to be quite cool.

Speaking of Transformers, Spielberg is directing a new movie based on the Transformers for release in 2006. Yeehaw!
