Laughable Spam

This one made me laugh…so good, right up until the last word:

Dear PayPal member,

To update your personal profile and continue using PayPal services you have to run the attached application to this email. Just run it and follow the instructions.

IMPORTANT! If you ignore this alert, your account will be suspended in next five business days and you will not be able to use PayPal anymore.

Thank you for using PayPal.

I believe “Ogqolkel” was the Aztec god “The Deceiver.”

  1. Ogqolkel has been angered by your insolence! You may have won this round, but I shall return to swindle you another day…

  2. If you think that’s bad, I’ve got a jokes website with fairly high traffic and naturally have a contact email address on the site. I’ve gotten that email twice in the past three hours and a letter about a Nigerian bank error 4 times.

  3. I got so peeved by a very professional PayPal scam spam on Thursday that I took five minutes and tracked down the host of the fake site, called the hosting company, got a great guy on the phone who confirmed it, and had them shut down. I know it’s like squashing ants, but every little bit helps. I also forwarded the four scam spams I received to spoof-at-paypal.com, which responded to each of them confirming that they were spam (I know), but it helps PayPal to track these sites down, too.

When we all give up email and switch to RSS (peer to peer email), this problem will disappear.

  4. Notification of Limited Account Access – Security Measures ?

Can anyone explain e-mails with the subject of:
“Notification of Limited Account Access – Security Measures ”

    and links going to:

    http://www.paypal.com.wscm.tk/us/webscr/Loginx.php

    http://www.paypal.com.cgi-bin.wsst.tk/us/webscr/Loginx.php

Is this what this blog is talking about in regards to spoof e-mails ?

  5. This is 100% a scam, as you suspected. The links actually point to wscm.tk, not to paypal. If in doubt, log into paypal through your browser (NOT by clicking on a link in email) and check your account.
