New Rule: If you don’t know me, don’t call me

I just posted this at Corante Many2Many:

I like Skype. It lets me make phone calls for free to the other 4M people who have signed up for the service. The calls go through my computer and they work real good.

But I’ve just gotten my second random phone call from some well-intentioned stranger who wants to know if I want to chat. Actually, I don’t. If you call my Skype number randomly, the odds are just about perfect that you’re going to be interrupting something that I’d rather be doing than speaking with a stranger. And here’s how you know that: If I wanted to be speaking with a stranger now, I’d be on the Skype phone calling one. If you can get through to me on my Skype line it’s because I don’t want to be speaking with a stranger now.

Thank you for your attention.

  1. That’s one of the several reasons I quit using Skype. It’s MSN Messenger with a slightly higher annoyance factor. At least that’s how everyone who intruded on my time was using it. You might want to look at FreeWorld Dial-up as an IP phone solution. http://www.fwdnet.net/ There’s a freee IP software program by Xten that’s quite usable and I found it far less intrusive (not to mention linked to the PSTN).

  2. Why make such a fuss over this annoyance: just take calls by people on your “friends” list, by setting your preferences accordingly. Also it will be a temporary phenomena: how many random phone calls on your POTS-phone do you get from total strangers just wanting to chat. Exactly: none.

  3. I get plenty of random phone calls on my POTS-phone from total strangers, all wanting to sell me something. I am curious about the phenomenon whereby people feel the need to contact others they don’t know. It certainly didn’t seem to exist in the POTS world. I don’t recall ever having the urge to randomly dial 10, or even 7 digits, just to talk to someone.

Of course I would dial 10 digits just to talk to David… :-)

  4. I used skype for only a while . . . then I found Vonage. Granted it does cost some and its availability is not nationwide yet – as long as you live in a decent sized city it will work.

For $35 a month I can call anywhere in the states and canada unlimited – cannot complain about that. It uses your current internet connection in coherence with your telephone line and you would never be able to tell you are routing the call.

http://www.vonage.com is the url for those of you that are interested.

I need not then be all-smart about bombs
Happily so for if I felt bombs were caterpillars
I’d doubt not they’d become butterflies
There is a hell for bombs
They’re there I see them there
They sit in bits and sing songs
    mostly German songs
And two very long American songs
and they wish there were more songs
    especially Russian and Chinese songs
and some more very long American songs
Poor little Bomb that’ll never be
an Eskimo song I love thee
I want to put a lollipop

O Bomb in which all lovely things
    moral and physical anxiously participate
    O fairylike plucked from the
    grandest universe tree
O piece of heaven which gives
both mountain and anthill a sun

Let me in Bomb rise from that pregnant-rat corner
nor fear the raised-broom nations of the world
    O Bomb I love you
I want to kiss your clank eat your boom
You are a paean an acme of scream
a lyric hat of Mister Thunder
    O resound thy tanky knees
    BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
BOOM ye skies and BOOM ye suns
BOOM BOOM ye moons ye stars BOOM
nights ye BOOM ye days ye BOOM
BOOM BOOM ye winds ye clouds ye rains

Yes Yes into our midst a bomb will fall
Flowers will leap in joy their roots aching
Fields will kneel proud beneath the halleluyahs of the wind
Pinkbombs will blossom Elkbombs will perk their ears
Ah many a bomb that day will awe the bird a gentle look
Yet not enough to say a bomb will fall
or even contend celestial fire goes out
Know that the earth will madonna the Bomb
that in the hearts of men to come more bombs will be born
magisterial bombs wrapped in ermine all beautiful
and they’ll sit plunk on earth’s grumpy empires
    fierce with moustaches of gold
