Sims Scandal

Donna at Copyfight aggregates info about how the philosopher Peter Ludlow managed to get banished from the Sims Online server by raking virtual muck. And Farhad Manjoo has an article in Salon that lays out the issues.

  1. Okay. So I understand that SIMS is a real business. Real money is being spent / earned. Real people invest real hours / days / … of their lives in the world.

    However, it’s difficult for me to take all of this too seriously and makes me reach for the the expression “get a life.” My unfortunate reaction is probably due to a lack of sensitivity and / or a dearth of understanding of these virtual worlds. –Nah.

  2. Sad but true . . . this has been going on for ages. I used to play Ultima Online, a MMRPG that is played by a ton of folks. Still to this day there is a thriving cash market for the items found in the game.
