Turning off filterkeys

Anyone know how to actually turn off the XP FilterKeys setting?

I have a lazy habit of resting a finger onf the shift key when I’m pausing between words. If I do that for more than 8 seconds, XP asks if I want to turn on FilterKeys. It does this even if I un-check the “Use FilterKeys” box on the Accessibility settings. The box stays un-checked, but the feature doesn’t turn off.

Note: Saying “Get a Mac” does not constitute help. Thank you.

As one of the commeters notes: Hold down both shift keys.

  1. Right. Thanks. Before reading here, about the holding-both-shifts-trick, I was alternately rebooting and saying bad words.

    Grrrerrrgrgrgrgrgggrrrrrrrrrrr.

  2. Thanks everyone for the best laugh in years. Thought I was the only one who had this sticky key problem but now don’t feel nearly as stupid (even though I tried the MS help pages before coming here!). Going to bookmark your site for future reference.

  3. effin sticky keys were pissing me off, thanks so much for helping!

  4. Fred Taylor –
You are a genius! I did just like you said:
held down one shift key, pressed F7, and while still holding down that first shift key, I pressed the second shift key three times and it beeped each time and the problem went away!
Can you believe I am a windows server admin and didn’t know this sh**

  5. Thank you so much. I thought I was in big trouble screwing up my dads computer.$%#@ Microsoft.

  6. THANK YOU! I read this page and eveything is fixed! OH! THANK YOU!

  7. whoooo! I love you! Finally I figure out how to turn that crap off. I actually formatted before because I couldn’t turn it off.. this time I was like “screw that.. fing MS and their accessibility feature must die”.

  9. does not work

  10. does not work

  11. I hold down the right shift key often, deliberately, to disable the auto-run feature when inserting a CD or DVD into my drives and it always annoys me when this “feature” comes on. It doesn’t seem to matter if you select OK or CANCEL from the message box that pops up because whatever choice you do make, FilterKeys is now on.

For some reason this seemed to not just affect my ability to type, but also the behavior of my mouse when browsing the web using FireFox. My scrollwheel on the mouse goes from scrolling through the current page to being used to move forward and back through visited pages and when clicking on a link using the scrollwheel button to open the link in a new tab, the behavior is changed for some reason such that my view switches to the newly opened page instead of remaining on the page I was viewing.

In the past I’ve always had to reboot to get things normal because I didn’t know how to turn it off but I can’t wait to try these things out next time it happens.

  12. Thank you so much for the two shift key advise. I’m on my computer at work and was freaking out about having to ask my boss how to get the damn thing off!! That has to be one of the stupidest things Bill Gates thought up (and he’s thought up so good ones) Anyway you saved me life and that of my computers so thanks :)

  13. Imagine…problem first posted in Oct 2003 still lives on… Typical of Windows… I started hitting both “shift” keys together couple of times when i heard a beep (i think on that particular try, i managed to hit both the keys at the same time)

  14. press shift 5 times, when the box appears, click settings then untick any boxes that appear, press ok, and hey-presto, its off.

  15. I accidently turned on my filter keys today. Found this site and the two shift keys worked for me. Then when a couple of guys here at work went to lunch BAM I activated their filter keys. It was funny to see one guy constantly rebooting. The other had no clue so later I walked by and used the two shift keys. They never knew I played a prank on them.

  16. Thanks for the site guys, making the change in the registry did it for me-
    ;Disable Filter Keys
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response]
    “Flags”=”122”

  17. thank you from serbian motherfucker

  18. Ok, this is interesting. None of the solutions listed above worked for me until…

I had two keyboards hooked up (1 USB and 1 PS/2). I unplugged the PS/2 keyboard and st it aside while trying all of the solutions above and was about to throw the damn box out of the window until on o whim I tried unplugging the USB KB and plugging in the PS/2 KB and it worked right away. I guess windows keeps track of which port sends the sticky/filter keys commands. So if you are having trouble, try this. Good Luck

    Troy

  19. OH MY FUCKING GOOOD! THANK U GUYS!!
