What File Sharing Hasn’t Done

Jane Black has an excellent article at BusinessWeek on the real causes of the drop in CD sales. She writes:
The recording industry keeps repeating that file-sharing is ruining CD sales. If it looked for some other reasons, it would find lots of them.

Very good article.
One thing she did not discuss, probably because it is beyond the scope of that article, is the role of radio in killing American pop music.
Compact Discs are selling well in France, I saw a report on French TV (http://www.france2.fr) about the success of French pop music which is mostly attributed to some popular new stars. Does anyone know anthing about French Broadcasting? Is ownership more difffuse than here?
Ok people, let’s face it – piracy is a major factor here. Via the Internet, I have high-speed, easy access to virtually all music made in the last couple of decades, virtually all newish movies, and quite a few old ones as well, as well as all computer programs and games. I pay nothing for this incredible resource, and frankly, there are no competitive commercial alternatives available. It’s very hard to compete with free products that also enjoy less clunky distribution.

Mebbe, but file sharing is available in France as well as the US, why are CD’s selling in France?
Ok, people, let’s face it: Prefacing a remark with “Ok people let’s face it” isn’t a substitute for actually refuting the facts the original article presents.
