Rawls, Fairness and Luck

The Boston Globe ran a succinct appreciation of John Rawls’ thinking about fairness yesterday. You might want to read it before The Globe withdraws it from public discussion by locking in its for-pay archive.

  1. There’s also an interesting op-ed piece about Rawls in the Dec 2nd issue of the New York Times. I’m embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of the man before, so I found the whole discussion very educational.

  2. As an undergraduate, my social philosophy professor would jump up and down, stand on top of tables and cuss like a “sonofa” while lecturing on Rawls. It’s not that he necessarily disagreed with everything Rawls wrote, just that the writing (the simplicity of the thought) struck a nerve, a good nerve. Along with Michael Walzer, Rawls is one of favorite social philosphers.
