The Future of Reading juxtaposed

Mark Pilgrim does some mighty provocative juxtapositioning of then and now quotes about books and reading.

The juxtapositions certainly make the case that things are different. They certainly point to things we’re all be sorry to give up, like being able to lend a friend a book. But, of course, they don’t tell the whole story, because the whole story is not only complex, and it’s not only unwritten, but it’s the story of the coming change in norms. And a change in norms rewrites all the stories leading up to it.

Anyway, it’s a terrific piece. Totally worth getting riled up about. [Tags: ebooks amazon kindle drm copyright copyleft everything_is_miscellaneous]

Web of Ideas: Leadership

On Wednesday at 6:30pm, I’m leading a discussion of whether leadership on the Web is different from leadership off the Web, especially business leadership. In fact, I’m gong to run through my 20 minute presentation for Le Web 3 on this topic. I’ve gotten pretty interested in the nature of the leadership of big collaborative projects, and I’m looking forward to a chance to have my inklings bashed around.

Plus, we serve pizza.

The session is open to all. It’s at the Berkman Center [map]. [Tags: berkman leadership]

Harold Feld on Google’s plan for global domination, or, well, American liberation

Harold Feld thinks Google is serious in its bid for spectrum. Here’s what he thinks Google’s aim is:

Google wants to eliminate the entire wireless “phone” industry and replace it with the “mobile broadband” industry. In this world, people do not buy “mobile phone service” with the option to load all manner of various features for additional prices onto their phones. People buy a wireless service contract for a “dumb pipe” similar to what they buy (now) from cable and dsl companies.

Harold, who is a great explainer, talks about the effect of the new anonymous bidding rule on the spectrum auction.

OLPC vs. Intel podcast

I’m listening to a terrific This Week In Tech podcast about the One Laptop Per Child project butting up against Intel and Microsoft. It features Steve Stecklow of the WSJ and Cory Doctorow, who, btw, acknowledges — great news! — his coming fatherhood.

Marco Montemagno on Internet myths

Marco Montemagno is a blog hoster and host of a show on Sky about technology. He was the opening speaker at the IAB marketing conference in Milan a few weeks ago and gave a funny, effective talk countering popular Italian misconceptions about the Internet — that it’s all about porn, that it’s dangerous, etc…pretty much the same as in the US. Marco is a heck of a presenter and was extremely well received. It’s now available at Blip.tv. (I had the misfortune of following him. OTOH, I had the good fortune to get to spend some time with him before and after the presentation.) [Tags: marco_montemagno internet italy iab ]

Will the Chinese police state survive the Internet?

Rebecca MacKinnon’s answer is, alas, probably yes. It is a great post from someone who knows what she’s talking about.

The value of the implicit – Defrag

I’ve posted the video of my talk at Defrag about the value of the implicit. It’s about four or five links down on this page. The original is here.

The talk is 30 minutes long and mainly incoherent.
