Aggregating review notices

Betsy Devine and JP Rangaswami have both posted reviews of Everything Is Miscellaneous (both quite favorable), but I’m getting embarrassed about posting each time someone reviews the book. On the other hand, I like acknowledging the work and thought that goes into them (yes, even the negative ones). So, I’ve added a list of reviews in the right-hand column (below the podcast blurb), and will probably batch up reviews more.

I’ll continue listing them separately at EverythingIsMiscellaneous.com, where I also have a page that lists them with a little commentary.

Does this seem like a sensible approach? Or, for the sake of marketing, should I crow about each review separately?

Loic on Sarkozy

Loic Le Meur has posted his thoughts about his involvement as an Internet advisor to the Sarkozy campaign. Very interesting.

Now, Loic writes, “I am back to business focusing on my next startup.” Too bad Sarkozy hasn’t snapped him up to advise him on Internet policy, because from what I saw of the new French president at Loic’s Le Web 3, we need someone to protect the Web from Sarkozy’s comfort with “Internet regulation.” The good news is that Sarkozy, like most politicians, seems genuinely not to understand the Net — his Le Web presentation said many good-sounding things, some of which contradicted others — which is an opportunity for someone like Loic to explain it to him…

See you tonight in Raleigh, or tomorrow and Thursday Friday in SF?

Tonight I’m giving a talk at Quail Ridge Books (3522 Wade Ave, Ridgewood Shopping Center) in Raleigh at 7.

On Wednesday, from 6-8, there’s a get-together for bloggers ‘n’ others – just a chance to talk. There will also be some free copies of my book around. That’s at Yahoo Brickhouse (500 3rd St, 5th Floor, SF3223 Mission St.) Thanks to Dabble and Brickhouse!

On ThursdayFriday, May 11, at noon, I’ll be at Yahoo in Sunnyvale for a public talk with Bradley Horowitz.

I hope to see you sometime soon. [Tags: everything_is_miscellaneous]

Susan Crawford’s appreciation of “Miscellaneous”

Susan Crawford — Cardozo law prof, ICANN member and founder of OneWebDay (Disclosure: I’m on its board) — has blogged a review of Everything Is Miscellaneous. It’s, well, lovely.

I got the Yahoo discussion time wrong

The public conversation with Bradley Horowitz at Yahoo on May 11 in Sunnydale is at noon, not 11am as I had said earlier. Sorry!

Shelley disagrees and also dislikes “Miscellaneous”

Shelley Burningbird Powers both disagrees with what I say and doesn’t much care for how I say it in Everything Is Miscellaneous. I appreciate Shelley’s care and thought. She does exactly what an author hopes reviewers will do — engage with the ideas — although of course I’d rather that she loved every comma and period in it. But, I didn’t ask the publishers to send her a copy thinking that she was likely to agree with it… [Tags: everything_is_miscellaneous shelley_powers burningbird]

Lots more at EverythingIsMiscellaneous…

Peter Merholz — the person who coined the term “blog,” and director-at-large of the Information Architecture Institute — reviews Everything is Miscellaneous and says “it does not disappoint.” “…David’s book isn’t about information, it’s about understanding, knowledge, and meaning — fundamentally, it’s a book on how the human condition is evolving.”

“Miscellaneous” reviews

Scoble’s got a brief review of Everything Is Miscellaneous, which he calls “a great read.”

Ed Yourdon writes up the first chapter, quite perspicaciously!

Britt Blaser reviews the talk I gave at the NY Public Library and our dinner afterwards.

Chris Locke reviews why he hasn’t yet picked up his copy from the post office. [Tags: everything_is_miscellaneous]

BTW, I’m keeping a list of all reviews – good, bad and indifferent – at the Everything Is Misc site. I’ll also mention them here as well.

What is information architecture? The slide show.

The always enjoyable Andrew Hinton has an insightful, witty, surprising set of slides ‘n’ text that tries to explain not only what Information Architecture is, but why it’s been so hard to explain. Along the way he has things to say about communities vs. communities of practice, how to attract flies, and why Wikipedia is more like an AK-47 than like an M-16. Great stuff, elegantly and entertainingly communicated. [Tags: information_architecture andrew_hinton ]
